EIGRP – 3 ways to a default route

This post will go through 3 ways to advertise a default in EIGRP.

Summary-address

1) Apply the summary-address command to the interface you would like the default to be sent out of. Configure a leak-map for any specifics that need to be sent. (this one is the easiest of the methods)

R3(config-if)#ip summary-address eigrp 100 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0

or use the following to remove the discard route from the routing table

R3(config-if)#ip summary-address eigrp 100 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255

May need to clear the routing table to see the effect (clear ip ro *)

Static Default Route

2) Create a static default and then either redistribute static or network 0.0.0.0 to send

R3(config)#ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 null 0
R3(config)#
R3(config)#router ei 100
R3(config-router)#redistribute static
or
R3(config-router)#network 0.0.0.0

Use IP Default-network

3) Third way is to use the IP default-network work command (The command will create a static to the major classfull network if the route isn’t classfull network itself). Then advertise with the network command

R3(config)#ip default-network 2.0.0.0
R3(config)#router ei 100
R3(config-router)#net 2.0.0.0
